Smooth Ballroom Dances
These are some examples of the popular smooth dances done in ballrooms and nightclubs all around the country and abroad:

Waltz is commonly known as the “Grandfather Of All Couples’ Dances.” This is the dance of kings and queens. It is the traditional dance of choice for a married couple’s first dance, thus coined the “Bridal Waltz.” The waltz is the epitomy of grace and elegance. It is a symbol of status, of culture, and of sophistication. The waltz is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long flowing movements almost floating across the dance floor. This dance uses rise and fall and plays with drama and suspense as the dancers unwind their story across the dance floor.

Foxtrot is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across the dance floor. The dance dates back to 1914 and is originally attributed to Harry Fox, a Vaudeville actor. The Foxtrot is characteristic of what most people think of when they think of the signature styles of dance done by Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.

American Style Tango is earthy and dramatic. Although walking movements dominate, Tango walks, having a “stalking” or “sneaking” character, are unlike the walks of other ballroom dances. Movements are sometimes slow and slithery, and other times sharp and stacatto, such as a quick foot flick or a sharp head snap to promenade position. Tango has the same counter clockwise flow of movement around the dance floor, but with a lesser sense of urgency in comparison to the smoother and more continuous ballroom dances.

Argentine Tango is very soft and intimate. It is the purest form of tango straight from the nightclubs of Buenos Aires. The music reflects a very steady pulse with a flare for passion and drama. Where other dances may be strong and loud, the Argentine Tango is a whisper of passion. The Argentine Tango is highly improvisational with care given mostly to the intimacy of the connection between the man and the woman. To dance the Argentine Tango is to share passion with another, decorated with a touch of playfulness.

Nightclub Sway, also known as the nightclub two step, is a smooth social dance done primarily to popular love songs and ballads. This popular American social dance is becoming more and more common in nightclubs and ballrooms both here in the United States as well as abroad.
